Montana (MT). The 41st state to join the Union in 1889

Montana factoids: The capital of Montana is Helena; its largest city (by pop.) is Billings. Today’s population in Montana is approximately 1.1 million (averaging around 7 people per square mile). Montana’s state tree is the ‘Ponderosa Pine’; its state flower is the ‘Bitterroot’; its state bird the ‘Western Meadowlark’; and its state fruit is the ‘Huckleberry’. Montana’s State Motto is: “Oro y Plata” (Gold and Silver).

1974

• April 23, 1974. As part of his 50-state lecture tour, Sri Chinmoy delivers the first of three lectures of the day —in 3 states. Entitled “Beauty” the lecture was given at 9:30am in the Montana Rooms of the Student Center at the University of Montana in Missoula, MT.
  • After the talk, Sri Chinmoy answered the following questions:
    • Q: What is the difference between seeing God and realising God?
    • Q: Could you please talk about attachment and detachment in love?
    • Q: How may one realise God?
    • Q: How do we deal with negative emotions like anger, jealousy and fear?

1980

• June 19, 1980. “Sri Chinmoy Day” is declared by Proclamation by the Governor of Montana, Thomas L. Judge, as the cyclists from the SCMT’s USA Bicycle Relay visit Montana.

1989

• April 1989. Sri Chinmoy celebrates his 25th Anniversary in America and receives many kind messages from throughout the country. The Senator from Montana, Conrad Burns, sent a letter which said, in part, “When you first began your efforts I am sure you felt like a candle in the wind, fighting hard not to be blown out. However, today you have ignited a torch that will never be extinguished. You have helped set the wheels in motion towards global peace. I applaud your lifelong achievement to your goal.“

1987-current, the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run often visits Montana on its cross-country trek and engages with its welcoming citizens (see example of photos of its previous visit)
