Delaware (DE). The 1st state to join the Union in 1787

Delaware factoids: The capital of Delaware is Dover; its largest city is Wilmington. Today’s population in Delaware is approximately 1.05 million (averaging around 544 people per square mile. Delaware’s state tree is the ‘American Holly’; its state flower is the ‘Peach Blossom’; its state bird the ‘Delaware Blue Hen’; and its state fruit is the ‘Strawberry’ . Delaware’s State Motto is:”Liberty and Justice”.

1980

  • Governor Pierre S. Du Pont issues a State of Delaware Proclamation declaring June 4, 1980 as “Sri Chinmoy Day” and “urge all Delawareans to support the U.S.A. Bicycle Relay in tribute to Sri Chinmoy and his contributions to sports in America.”
    • Delaware was one of the 18 states a team of cyclists rode through as their U.S.A. Bicycle Relay zoomed across 18 states on a 22-day journey to the pacific to honour their spiritual teacher’s contributions to sports in the U.S.

1982

  • August 10, 1982. Sri Chinmoy delivers a lecture entitled “Surrender” at the University of Delaware (UD) in Newark, Delaware.
    • Governor and three mayors issued proclamations
    • On this 1982 ‘Fifty Oneness-State-Songs’ lecture series, U.S. Senator William Rother Jr. of Delaware states, “It is a great opportunity for Delawareans to meet such a renowned and devoted disciple of world peace. Your spiritual insights and boundless talents have struck a chord around the globe.”
    • Sri Chinmoy also completes a 7-mile ‘solo’ run in Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware. These 7-mile ‘solo’ runs are part of his honoring the souls of individual states in this ‘Fifty Oneness-State-Songs’ lecture series

1994

  • January 14, 1994. The Governor of Delaware, Hon. Thomas R. Carper,  writes a letter on behalf of the state to congratulate Sri Chinmoy on completing “drawing of 1-million birds of peace”. In this letter he recognizes the dedication of Delaware as a ‘Sri Chinmoy Peace State’ and offers thanks for the “continued effort to publicize the cause of world peace”.
    • Note: between 20 Nov. 1992 and 14 July 1993, thirteen (13) American states were designated “Sri Chinmoy Peace States”, these are included Delaware.

1987-current, the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run passes through Delaware frequently on its cross-country trek and engages with its welcoming citizens (see example of photos of its previous visit)
