Arizona factoids: The capital of Arizona is Phoenix — which is also its largest city. Known as the “Grand Canyon State”, today’s population is approximately 7.6 million (averaging around 63 people per square mile). Arizona’s state tree is the ‘Palo Verde’; its state flower is the ‘Saguaro Cactus Blossom’; and its state bird the ‘Cactus Wren’. Arizona’s State Motto is: “Ditat Deus” (God enriches).

  • April 24, 1974. Sri Chinmoy delivers a lecture entitled “Humanity’s Teachers“, at 4 p.m. at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona
    • Sri Chinmoy met with Mayor Bradley of Tempe, Arizona, then spent several hours in the beautiful Phoenix Centre before leaving for New Mexico as part of his American lecture tour.
  • Unknown date, published in 1974. Members of the Phoenix, Arizona Centre ask Sri Chinmoy questions on ‘opportunity’. These, along with many other Q&As are published in At the Doors of Time and Delight Opportunity Knocks ( 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ). And the following aphorism by Sri Chinmoy: Not really lost
1977
  • February 9, 1977
    • Mayor Hance of Phoenix, Arizona sends Sri Chinmoy a letter of welcome for an expected visit.
  • June 6, 1979
    • Sri Chinmoy offers a public meditation at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona
    • The Sri Chinmoy Race in Scottsdale, Arizona (Sri Chinmoy runs a personal best for 3 miles in a time of 22:21 (7:27/mile pace).

1981

  • February 15, 1981
    • the ‘Sri Chinmoy Meditation Grove‘ was dedicated with planting of trees) in Kiwanis Park, Tempe, Arizona
    • The Sri Chinmoy 5K Race in Scottsdale, Arizona (Sri Chinmoy completed the 5k in a time of 22 min. 29 sec.).

1987-current, the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run passes through Arizona bi-annually on its cross-country trek and engages with its welcoming citizens (see example of photos of its previous visit)
