Georgia (GA). The 4th state to join the Union in 1788

Georgia factoids: The capital of Georgia is Atlanta — which is also its largest city. Today’s population in Georgia is approximately 11.3 million (averaging around 190 people per square mile). Georgia’s state tree is the ‘Southern Live Oak’; its state flower is the ‘Cherokee Rose’; its state bird the ‘Brown Thrasher’; its state fruit is the ‘Peach’ and its state nut is the ‘Pecan’ (though it state crop is a ground nut: the peanut). Georgia’s State Motto is: “Wisdom, Justice, Moderation”

1974

• February 20, 1974. Sri Chinmoy delivers a morning lecture, entitled ‘Wisdom, Justice and Moderation’, at the Student Center Chapel, Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.
  • The following Q&A were given at this lecture:
    • Question: What is the difference between the transcendental Self and the ordinary self?
    • Question: It seems like it will take such a long time to realise this transcendental Self.

1977

• October 7, 1977. Lillian Carter, mother of President Jimmy Carter, who, at age 68, was Peace Corps volunteer in India from 1966 to 1968, met with and was honored by Sri Chinmoy in Americus, GA.
  • Later that evening Mrs. Carter attends a concert given by Sri Chinmoy and his students in her honour.

1980

• October 7-14, 1980. Sri Chinmoy launches the “Salutations to America” 1,300-mile non-stop relay at midnight in Concord, NH, USA. The relay, comprised of 15 runners from the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, goes on to carry a flaming torch through each of the 13 original states of the US and completes its journey seven days later in Atlanta, Georgia.

1991

• June 1, 1991. Sri Chinmoy offers a Peace Concert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.

1994

• April 2, 1994. Sri Chinmoy offers a brief meditation at the opening of the World Choir Concert in Atlanta, GA.
  • at the event he meets American poet Maya Angelou.
