Kansas (KS). The 34th state to join the Union in 1861

Kansas factoids: The capital of Kansas is Topeka; its largest city (by pop.) is Wichita. Today’s population in Kansas is approximately 2.9 million (averaging around 35 people per square mile). Kansas’s state tree is the ‘Cottonwood’; its state flower is the ‘Wild Native Sunflower’; its state bird the ‘Western Meadowlark’; and its state fruit is the ‘Sandhill Plum’. Kansas’s State Motto is: “Ad Astra per Aspera” (To the Stars through Difficulties).

1974

  • March 5, 1974. As part of his 50 states lecture tour in 1974, Sri Chinmoy delivers his third lecture —in 4 states— on this day at 7:30pm entitled “Silence” in the Battenfield Auditorium/Student Center at Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, KS.

1980

  • June 11, 1980. ‘Sri Chinmoy Day’ was declared by Proclamation by the Governor of Kansas, John Carlin, in honor of the day the SCMT “USA Bicycle Relay” was going through Kansas. Shawnee County, the City of Osborne, and the City of Glen Elder also declared Proclamations. The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team (SCMT) cyclists traversed 18 states in 22-days to honor Sri Chinmoy’s contributions to sports in the USA.

1987-current, the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run often visits Kansas on its cross-country trek and engages with its welcoming citizens (see example of photos of its previous visit).
